(About) 100 Words on... Chet Baker's "Peace"

Peace
Chet Baker
Enja, 2006

Chet Baker recorded Peace with David Friedman's vibraphone-led trio in 1982 performing a collection of David Friedman original compositions (plus Horace Silver's "Peace").  Rarely has Baker demonstrated the complexity of his talent on a recording.  Not known for his technical expertise, Baker navigates Friedman's clever charts, infusing them with that trademark Baker coolness.  This is Baker at perhaps his most stripped down and vunerable and it is this creative vunerability that makes this disc the success it is.  Buster Williams provides splendid swing to these pieces, gently propelling them toward their creative destination, something between sublime and perfection.
